New to Transit?
A little nervous about making the jump from driving to transit? Read through these helpful tips and make it an easy ride every time you use transit.
Tips on Riding the Local Bus
Pay the fare as you board or show the operator your Day Pass, Weekly Pass or Monthly Pass. Exact fare is required. Touch the yellow strip or pull the cord on the interior of the bus to alert the operator that you want to get off at the next stop. Please exit through the back door when possible and take all your belongings with you.
Tips on Riding the Commuter Bus
Pay the one-way fare as you board or show the operator your Ten-Trip ticket or Monthly Pass. Exact fare is required. Commuter Buses have pre-set stops, so watch for the stop closest to your destination. Take all your belongings with you when you exit.
Tips on Riding Light Rail
Purchase a ticket from the ticket vending machine before boarding Light Rail. Tickets are not available onboard. Press the button on the outside of the train to gain access. To exit, press the green button next to the door and take all your belongings with you.
Tips on Riding the Metro Subway
Purchase a ticket from the ticket vending machine at the station. Pass through the turnstile and make your way to the platform. Board the train when the doors open. Listen for your station stop, or refer to the system map in each car. Exit when the doors open and take all your belongings with you.
Tips on Riding the MARC Train
Purchase a ticket prior to boarding the train. Tickets purchased on the train are subject to a $3.00 fee if the ticket office was open at train departure time. Listen for station announcements from the conductor. Exit the train carefully as some stations do not have an elevated platform. Take all your belongings with you.
Tips on Riding the DC Metrorail
Purchase a ticket from the ticket vending machine at the station. Pass through the turnstile and make your way to the platform. Board the train when the doors open. Listen for your station stop, or refer to the system map in each car. Exit when the doors open and take all your belongings with you.
Taking Your Bike on Transit
Only folding bikes in cases are allowed on MARC Train. Bikes are allowed on Light Rail and Metro Subway except before and after a sporting event at Camden Yards Sports Complex. Most MTA Local Buses have front bumper-mounted bike racks. Ask the operator for assistance when attaching a bike to the rack.
